Don’t get confused, this is a training course which is very demanding as well as very rewarding. It’s a career pathway to becoming a dive professional. What you learn as a Divemaster will prepare you in the right direction for your future as a pro Instructor, who you learn with will be the biggest influencing factor.
We have created a unique dive resort & Instructor training center at Kata Beach with a purpose-built private dive pool. This is the ideal location for your divemaster course, we offer affordable accommodation, nearby restaurant with discount for Phuket Dive Tours customers, laundry service, massage parlour and we’re just 100m from the main Beach at Kata and local nightlife.
At Phuket Dive Tours we teach SSI Dive master courses. We find that the elearning and training curriculum is much more user friendly and cost effective than other agencies. Making your transition into a dive professional a smooth and rewarding experience.
While there are some minor differences between scuba diving training agencies, SSI’s online eLearning is significantly more affordable than other brands. SSI Divemaster trainees also benefit from the full support of the SSI regional training manager. Additionally. SSI is the only scuba diving education brand with a dedicated office in Phuket, unlike other major brands that don’t have a head office in Thailand.
Whats involved?
As a Divemaster trainee you will work closely with your instructors to expand your diving skills and knowledge to a professional level, following them as they lead other students. Then in the most fulfilling part of the course, you’ll learn and practice supervising diving activities and assisting with student training. You will also experience first-hand the day to day job of a Dive Master in real situations – pool, classroom, beach dives, boat dives as well as the social side of working for the best dive shop in Phuket
You will start your divemaster course for the first week passively assisting and observing our instructors with their day to day workloads. This way you will get to know our teaching routine, what is needed & what it takes to prepare for a diving trip every day. You will join our instructors at the back of their groups learning the dive sites, practising your navigational skills & making note of different features & marine life for future reference. In this time you will get to know our staff who will all have an input and influence on your Divemaster training.
The second week of the divemaster course is where you’ll begin to step up. You will now slowly to begin actively assisting the instructor with their students in training. Your role will will become more prominent as the days go by. Eventually you will do skills circuits, be assessed on your rescue skills, map dive sites, prepare emergency plans & be assessed on how you deal with emergency situations.
Then in the last week of your divemaster course, you will go back to assisting the team & leading certified Divers & taking refreshers out. The final day of your course will be all you! You need to organise a dive trip, in every angle of preparation from the boat roster to the food orders, the briefs, the equipment preparation & the crew delegation. After your DM Day your Instructor who will be there with you can evaluate on your performance of the trip to give you helpful pointers to aid you now that you are an SSI Divemaster!
Then it’s off to the pub to celebrate with what we like to call your DM challenge! but that’s a whole other story!
What do I need to start the dive master course?
You must be certified in Rescue techniques and have currently valid CPR certification, such as React Right or Emergency First Response. You will need to have 40 logged dives to begin the course.
Although you may have some or all of your own equipment, we provide the basic equipment. You will be expected to have or purchase an SMB. Computers, compass and torches we can provide but this is something that you’ll definitely need to have for future use. We give a 10% equipment discount to our students.

How long will the divemaster course take?
Although the course may be run in around ten days, at Phuket Dive Tours we recommend that you allow four weeks to six weeks for completion in order to receive the full benefit of your education.
Now what?
As a Dive Master, you may supervise and assist with both training and non-training dive activities in a variety of environments; helping with classes as well as planning and leading guided dive tours. You may also conduct certain scuba programs for certified divers, such as scuba reviews. After successfully completing the Divemaster course, you may wish to continue your dive education by attending an Instructor Training Course, on your way to becoming an SSI Assistant Instructor or Open Water Instructor.
